Chinese technology stocks continue to decline: on October 30, the STAR 50 index fell another 5.48%. Earlier, Reuters estimated the accumulated drop in the index at about 40% in less than four months, and the reduction in companies' market value at approximately $480 billion. Investors are revising expectations of future earnings and return on investments in artificial intelligence.

The valuation of $480 billion is given in a Reuters analysis from October 26, updated October 27. It reflects the accumulated loss of market capitalization at the time of publication, not the result of the latest trading or the amount of companies' spending on AI.

Sell-off Hits Tech Sector and Broader Market

At the close of trading on October 30, the STAR 50 ended at 1,160.84 points, Xinhua reports. The index includes the 50 largest stocks of the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market tech board that meet liquidity requirements. Its composition covers a broader range of companies than just AI developers.

Pressure is also evident outside the technology segment. According to Reuters data on October results, the CSI 300 index of China's largest companies fell 8.5% for the month—the worst monthly performance since early 2016. At the same time, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.5% on October 30: the sell-off is affecting different parts of the Chinese market unevenly.

The scale of the repricing is also visible in individual stocks. Reuters reported that shares of chip makers MetaX and Moore Threads had lost about half of their value since July by the time of the analysis.

Falling Prices Do Not Resolve the Question of Business Valuation

In its analysis from October 26–27, Reuters noted that the STAR 50 was trading at about 100 times trailing earnings versus nearly 250 at its peak. This is a historical snapshot: subsequent changes in prices and financial results affect the metric.

The price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E, helps assess how much investors pay for a unit of earned profit. A high multiple may reflect expectations of rapid growth, temporarily low current earnings, or a combination of these factors.

Thus, the depth of the decline alone does not answer the question of whether stocks are attractive. If profit forecasts deteriorate simultaneously with falling prices, the valuation can remain high. If a company maintains orders, profitability, and cash flow, its position may differ substantially from that of other sector players.

For analysis, not only revenue growth rates matter but also the amount of capital expenditures, debt burden, and ability to finance development without constantly raising new funds.

Which Expectations Investors Are Reevaluating

Among the pressure factors, Reuters cites high valuations, concerns about AI demand, and possible restrictions on supplies of Chinese equipment to overseas markets. The agency does not identify a single obvious event that triggered the sell-off.

For chip and equipment suppliers, access to external markets affects potential sales. Restricting the pool of buyers can alter projections of future revenue and return on production capacity. However, investors' concerns about demand do not by themselves confirm an actual decline.

Declining capitalization can also complicate business financing. It does not directly erase money from corporate accounts, but when issuing new shares at a lower price, a company will have to sell a larger stake to raise the same amount.

For investors, the Chinese sell-off raises the question of how much growth expectations are already priced into valuations. The answer should be assessed based on specific company results: orders, margins, cash flow, and capital needs. Stock declines do not prove the technology's failure, and the technology's potential does not guarantee investment returns at any price.
